The Roots of Fogbreak Ranch
There is a moment most mornings when the fog rolls through the mountains and breaks across our ridge. The clouds drift below us, the sun begins to shine through, and the land slowly comes to life. That daily reminder of where we are and why we chose this life inspired the name Fogbreak Ranch.
Like many families, we found ourselves wanting something different from the pace and pressures of city life. We longed for a life that felt more connected—to the land, to our food, to the seasons, and to the people around us. We wanted the security that comes from growing our own food, stewarding our own water resources, and building skills that could sustain our family for generations.
That dream led us to a mountaintop along the border of Southern Humboldt and Southern Trinity Counties, where Fogbreak Ranch is taking shape one season at a time.
Our journey to homesteading is shaped by the experiences we bring with us. Dana spent more than 20 years working in professional kitchens, many of them focused on organic, locally sourced, and sustainably produced food. Working alongside talented chefs, farmers, and producers fostered a deep appreciation for quality ingredients, sustainable food systems, and the connection between the land and the meals we share.
Carissa brings a background in medicine and a growing passion for herbalism, blending healthcare knowledge with an interest in traditional plant wisdom and natural wellness. Her love of creating by hand extends to jewelry making, where artistry, patience, and attention to detail come together in the same spirit of craftsmanship that guides life at Fogbreak Ranch.
Today, our homestead operates completely off-grid, powered by the sun and guided by a commitment to self-reliance, stewardship, and sustainability. Living this way has taught us to be intentional with the resources we use and deeply appreciative of the natural systems that support us. Every improvement we make is another step toward the resilient life we set out to build.
Homesteading isn't always easy. It requires patience, hard work, and a willingness to learn from both successes and failures. Every fence post, garden bed, and harvest represents another step in building the life we imagined when we first left the city behind.
As Fogbreak Ranch continues to grow, we hope to share not only the food we produce, but also the knowledge, skills, and experiences that make this way of life possible. Through workshops and hands-on experiences, we look forward to helping others connect with the land and discover a deeper appreciation for sustainable living.
From our mountain ridge where the fog breaks each morning, we're building something rooted in resilience, community, and connection to the land—and we're grateful to share it with you.
The heart of the ranch
Nate
Nate is a core part of the Fogbreak Ranch story. With a background in mechanics and maintenance and a remarkable ability to build, repair, and improve just about anything, he has helped shape the ranch in countless ways. Many of the projects, systems, and improvements around the property reflect his hard work, ingenuity, and dedication. Though life has taken him away from the mountain for now, Nate continues to support the ranch from afar and remains an integral part of our team. We look forward to the day he returns and once again calls Fogbreak Ranch home.
Regenerative farming
To us, regenerative farming means caring for the land in a way that gives back more than it takes. Through thoughtful stewardship, healthy soil practices, and working with nature rather than against it, we strive to build a healthier and more resilient ecosystem with every season.
From us to you
At Fogbreak Ranch, we believe there is value in knowing who made the things you bring into your home. That's why everything we offer is grown, crafted, or created by us, right here on the ranch. Whether it's food from our gardens, handcrafted jewelry, herbal products, or other farm-made goods, each piece carries a connection to the land, the people who made it, and the care that went into every step of the process.
Off-Grid Living
For us, off-grid living is about more than generating our own power—it's about living with intention. Being powered by the sun reminds us each day that our resources are not unlimited and that thoughtful stewardship matters. This lifestyle has taught us resilience, self-reliance, and a deeper connection to the natural world, helping us build a life that is both sustainable and deeply rooted in the rhythms of the land.
